Realistic plants and crops
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:21:24 pm »

Hi everyone,
one of the thing I love of DF is the mix of fantasy stuff and realistic features (accuracy of how stone layers are simulated for instance). What puts me off are the plants&crops, I really don't "accept" that vegetables grow underground with no light source.
Is there a mod out there that includes real-life crops such as wheat, corn, potato, grape, cotton, etc?
Farming would be more challenging and interesting.

Well, technically, unless some note of it was made somewhere I don't know, we don't even know that dwarven crops are vegetables.  Plump helmets are definitely a fungus, and although the others are referred to as cave "wheat" or quarry "bushes," I never took that as anything other than a naming convention.

I've always assumed that dwarves just cultivated various forms of plantlike organisms, fungi and the like, and at some point someone named them in the style of outdoor plants because it was a convenient way to know off the top of their head what they did.

But there are some mods that add lots of outdoor crops.  I do not unfortunately recall which one I got that adds all the potatoes and carrots and things I have in my game, since it was part of a mixed modpack.

Chariot's Botany Mod 2:

Both civilization Forge and Dig Deeper have similar plant_gloss files adding a ton of above ground crops, CF has some additional below ground stuff, and DD adds one as well.

Iituem did a nice write-up of the vanilla plants, as well as making some adjustments to their growth.  His thread is at http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=24666.0, but his link in that post now points to a large file which does not contain his work.  A later post in the thread has his original work.

The other authors, listed above, do have a lot of nice plants in their mods.  They also add a pile of additional underground plants which you will want to remove if you don't want to end up with three or four times as many as are already in vanilla.

Well I included several plot mods in with my last mod.  One of them is intended to completely replace the game's plants and I made a file of plants of my own.  I really hope Toady puts out the new version soon, can't wait to get at the raws and trying screwing around with the new bits he's put in.

Hm.  Crops no longer wither on the fields if they're not harvested before the seasons change?  The wiki is badly in need of an update, if so.

I've never really done much with plants.

Mature crops wither if they are not harvested after some length of time.  Crops that have not matured continue to grow.
