The real question is, how do players all play games at the same time, and then how can all of their changes to the world be integrated without writing over previous changes?

With what we can do today : only one player plays at a time.

The idea is to make the world grow progressively, with plenty of player made things to discover for other players.

@schnobs: Perhaps, but it'd be a pain in the ass to have a vandal claim a world and upload multiple invalid worlds in succession, so the system would have to track a full revision history.  Dwarf Fortress worlds are big, even after solid 7-Zip or solid RAR compression.  Also, a vandal could pretty easily upload massive files, or upload collections of porn, or whatever... aside from the fact that it'd bring any server to its knees in terms of hard disc space, it's certainly not something you'd want to expose people to.  Look at Wikipedia's vandalism problems (many engineered by intellectual perverts who think Wikipedia is impractical (I think of it like an animal activist killing animals to protest eating meat)).

@Xerxes: "Claim" was chosen intentionally to mean "one person at a time"...

I figure you'd only need about three possible worlds on the site at an initial level of interest, and that'd probably even last a good amount of time.  You could always expand to include more worlds when interest grew.

Well, my first thought on this was not like a bloodline game; I meant not claiming a world, but actually claiming a site to build on within a world, and I was thinking players could claim different sites on the same world.

Yeah, but that is a real issue which I don't whether Toady will solve it or not : It is today not possible for the same reasons that you can only have one fortress, OR one adventurer in the world.

A solution might (and really "might") be that every season play everybody sends information to a server. And this one will somehow abstract what would the relations be between these seasons.
