Donating from Germany without credit card?
« on: January 09, 2010, 09:11:54 am »

I'd really love to throw a small amount (about 20 to 30€) into the Toady Treasure Chest, but unfortunately, I got no credit card or paypal account. What is the best way to solve this task?

1) Create a Paypal account :-) They do even without a CC good work ("Lastschrift")
2) Get a CC, it has some benefits, espacially when "living" in  the internet...
3) Ask someone you know that (s)he has one of the above, give him the money and let him/her the money and let him/her do the transaction (I have both, so when you can get to Hamburg, Hanover or Bremen easily we could arrange a meeting)
4) But very unsafe... Go to your bank, exchange the EUR into USD, put them in an envelope, write Tarns address on it and send it to him...

Living in Germany myself, I believe that creating a PayPal account is the way to go.

My problem is almost the same as yours.I live in Brazil, and i got no credit card nor paypal account.I think you can deposit money in a paypal account in the bank, and also convert into USdollars.

Find someone who's traveling to the US and have them mail it when they arrive? Look for American tourists and try to get dollars from them?

Absolutely not!

It will never reach its destination!  :o

You could instead use a personal check. The check is worthless to anyone except the person it is intended for, and it looks just like a piece of paper. I recommend wrapping the check in a standard letter both to hide it, and also for greetings. You could even send a greeting card. The light cardboard of the card is perfect for hiding a check within.

That's probably why he called it "very unsafe."

Why not just send a money order / cashier's check?  Surely there is some German equivalent of Western Union.  Here in the states it *might* cost like one dollar to get one, though the branch in my city doesn't even charge a service fee.  Banks love these things because they never bounce.

(Note that I'm not referring to wiring money to Toady-- that'd be a pain in the ass.)

My parents had bad experiences with german checks in the US during their honeymoon... But OK, thats 32 years since then :-) But thats the cause why I not mentioned checks of any kind, and because of the fact that I didn't see a check as payment method for over a decade here in germany, neither in a shop nor salary...

Paypal is the easiest, safest and fastest method. So I'd say create a paypal account, it's pretty easy to use.
