smoothing / detailing veins
« on: March 21, 2007, 10:29:00 am »

I tried to make that point in one of the numerous rewalling threads, but somehow it appears to have drowned in the noise. Or maybe it's not even new. Either way:

If a bit of smoothed rock is precious, a carefully worked out vein ought to be even more impressing. Dwarves really should be capable of making something worthwhile of a rock crystal where it is; why mine it and put a dull wall in it's place?

I'm so tempted to quote Gimli's glittering caves rant all over again.

(Of course, there would be quite a few instances where I'd rather have a dull wall instead. But that's not what this post is about.)

Allow ore to be smoothed? Sounds great to me. Plus, it seems like it would be much simpler to implement than tunneling ai's.

The most important reason for this feature is that you can't carve fortifications onto ore veins or gem lodes.  A fortified entrance passageway often looks pathetic when there are ore lodes breaking up the fortifications and causing blind spots.

I would very heartily support this too. Sometimes you'd like to leave a whole section of wall in place for structural or defensive reasons, and after that you'd like to be able to finish it for obvious reasons.

And again, the fortifications crowd takes over. Well, I certainly won't complain if as a side benefit you could carve fortifcations into ores. But the main point I was trying to get at was that a gem logged in the wall of your dining room should be a boon, not a burden.
