[40d] Saves keep getting corrupted
« on: December 28, 2009, 05:29:21 am »

Hi,

I'm new to the DF and started playing couple of days ago. Couldn't get by the ASCII, so I downloaded RantingRodent's Graphical Overhaul [1.0.7a] for DF. That's the only Mod I'm using.
Every time I save my game and come back after a while the save get corrupted. Only once I could still play my fort. Even autosaves get corrupted:

Help please?

Here's dxdiag:

Saves corrupted how?  Are you getting any kind of error message?

Yup, that's important.  Here are some other threads about that error message.

Looking over those... did you unzip the DF files to your hard drive before playing?  If you didn't, it could definitely cause this error.

Here's that dxdiag for anyone who doesn't want to wait for that upload site:

I extracted the archive.
The link didn't help... I used chkdsk... no bad sectors. Used Win95 Compatability... after a new play... the error comes back. :/

Where did you install DF on your hard drive?  Also, we need details about how long it takes for your saves to get corrupted.  Does it happen if you save and then continue immediately?  What if you continue 30 seconds later?  10 minutes?  An hour?  Does it still happen if you don't close the game?

One thing you should definitely try is getting a fresh copy of vanilla 40d and installing that to a separate location on your hard drive (don't ever install DF on top of an existing installation of DF).

Drive D: where I put everything non-system related like games and movies. (D:\Downloads\df\Dwarffort\)

I would need to test it, but...
1. After the saving I could continue immediatetly.
2. Save didn't get corrupted after couple of minutes, maybe a hour, as far as I can remember
3. Saves get corrupted most times the next day.

Tried in a diffrent folder... if it happens again, I will change the drive (C:) or my backup hard drive (an old one).

Try checking your virus scanner's logfiles - it might be mistaking your saved games as viruses and trying to "clean" (read: corrupt) them.

Don't have an active virus scanner.

Then you should probably install one - for all you know, a virus could be the root cause of all of your data corruption (though given how viruses behave these days, it's rather unlikely).

By active I mean that it's not on all the time. I check for viruses now and then. ;)

Umm?

Viruses are getting MORE damaging, not less.
As for this problem, it sounds to me like your data/objects got corrupted.
Delete your saves and clear the data/objects folder, then try again.

DF doesn't care what drive it is stored on.

Viruses are getting MORE damaging, not less.

I would beg to differ - while viruses authors of the past enjoyed destroying data, those of today prefer to silently hijack the system and use it for nefarious purposes (sending spam, performing denial of service attacks, etc.) and leave the user unaware that there's anything wrong with their system.

But this isn't really relevant to the discussion.

When you ran chkdsk, did you explicitly tell it to check for bad sectors? It doesn't do that by default (since it'd take many hours to scan a large disk), so a regular scan could easily come up clean. If your system has any sort of hard drive diagnostic in the BIOS (Dell systems generally do), I'd try running that as well.

After your post (Quietust), I checked for viruses. The scanner found some and chasmed them.
Also I started playing (and saving) with the music on (I don't turn it off - 0/255).

And I didn't have a corrupt save... yet.

Edit: Nah... they still get corrupted. A hour ago I made a save. It's corrupted.
