How about adding an aid to measuring things out?  For instance, under designate have a prompt which reads of the current size of the area you're about to designate.  So lets you hit d, then hit enter on the *, then move your cursor to the +.

code:

*.....
......
......
.....+

The prompt would read "6x4".

Certainly a good idea.
It'd greatly ease the creation of 13x13 rooms, which is very often what's needed for storage, but difficult to count.

ASD suggested this a long time ago...  I've just been preoccupied.  It certainly seems like  a good idea, and an interface change that would persist through whatever alterations the guts of the game suffers.
