Maybe the game just replayed the scene from three different angles?

But, honestly, the 'keeps calculating damage without advancing a step' option seems the most likely. Someone should research this. FOR SCIENCE!

EDIT: After further research, this seems to be the reason. When I was battling a wolf pack last night, I neatly bisected one of the wolves, chopping off its lower half, and sending it flying into a tree, mangling most of it... including its lower body and rear legs.

Either that or he hit the kid so hard he smashed reality and killed his counterparts in two other DF universes.
Quantum headsmashing created headcrabs.

This makes me want to make a halflife mod!

I've had this happen as well, but I found it was due to me dealing so much damage that the head was smashed into an "unrecognizable mass" (which does leave the head behind to be smashed into something "unrecognizable" again and again), propelled the elf away by the force of the blow, which caused the elf to hit a tree, allowing for the elf's head to be smashed into an unrecognizable mass again, and this registered the message twice for the tree impact.

Hoorah for hammermen!

Too bad severed limbs don't bounce off trees or I would have played elf pinball already, each limb being severed ten times. And a lot of blood.
