I don't understand color
« on: December 29, 2009, 05:14:55 am »

I'm absolutely confused when it comes to assigning colors to my custom things. Is there a list somewhere that tells you what the numbers represent and shows what color has what numbers?

I belive it is =)

Humm, so if I wanted red, which if I understand things correctly is: 128

Then it would be
[COLOR:1:2:8]
In the textfile?

Or is it hexnumbers I need to find?

Bright red on black is 4:0:1; red on black 4:0:0; red on green 4:2:0, etc.

[foreground]:[background]:[brightness of foreground]

Ah, I think I understand.
0.0.0
The first number is foreground, the middlenumber is background and the third number is brightness of foreground?

And the colors have a range from 0-7 where:
0 is black
1 is blue
2 is green
3 is cyan
4 is red
5 is magenta
6 is brown
and 7 is light grey?

Yes, that's correct. The brightness value is either 0 or 1, as I'm sure you can see.

Also, experimentation has shown that dye colors, despite apparently having a veritable rainbow compared to other items, still will only display as one of the 16 colors possible by combining foreground color with brightness.  They will choose the color closest by RBG to those 16 colors, as defined in the init.txt.

One wonders if the future holds a 64-color version of DF.

I certainly hope so.

I think the youth today have basked enough in luxury!
64 colours?!

I mean, most modern games comes in 32-bit, that's 4,294,967,296 colours, yet how many can you think of?

I remember "tricking" my first VGA monitor into displaying all 64 colors at once.  The article in BYTE warned that it might damage the monitor.  It didn't, at first.  Then, it did.  Eventually we had to ship it back to the manufacturer for service under warranty.  That was back when the cost of postage was not more than the cost of the broken item.

We also walked to school uphill in both directions, in the snow even in summer.   :D

After getting into DF I need only 16 colors.
