Ghost Child?
« on: November 02, 2009, 08:41:25 pm »

So I look through dwarf therapist and notice something odd. The in-game status check lists 40 dwarves; Dwarf therapist lists 41 dwarves: my normal 40 dwarves and one more dwarven child. My unit list shows no living children, and no child with the same name as the one dwarf therapist shows.

The "ghost" child has dabbling in all social skills and no other skills, but for some reason is ecstatic (1,145).

I've made the following modifications to the game:
Orc mod, modified with [BUILDINGDESTROYER:2]
Doubled the sizes of all megabeasts
Awemedinite
Fixed cats
Made beak dogs tamable and trainable

Any idea how this happened?

the kid was kidnapped
for some reason when kids gets kidnaped thay still show up on the relations screen and some other stuff
when kids get kidnaped they get the thought "happy to be free" which counts as 1000 happy points

Yep, same thing happens with Dwarf Manager.

Darn, my laziness and my OCD clash again. I figured letting him get kidnapped would save me the trouble of cleaning up his corpse :/

If he comes back to siege the fortress and I kill him, will it remove the entry?

Weirdly, one of my kidnapped ones was Ecstatic while missing both eyes and with a damaged brain.  The apparent location was the place where the kidnapping took place.  I tried bringing the kid back with Dwarf Companion, but all I was able to do was change the location of the ghost.

I have no idea, I haven't done a fort with a kidnapped kid for long enough to find out.

To my knowledge, no fortress has been sieged by one of it's own kidnapped children. You can get sieged by dwarves, humans, and elves who were kidnapped during worldgen though.

It's possible that since the world doesn't technically age while you're playing a fort, the child doesn't grow until you abandon when he's suddenly launched into adulthood. Not sure though.

Mmmmn, my money is on Ghost Child. Here's why.

Kid gets kidnapped all the way on the southern end of the map. (My fortress is against the north edge.)

Shows up both in game and in DT long after his kidnapping. But the location the game shows him isn't where he went off map....it's where the Kitty Cage out front of my fortress USED to be, where he spent the majority of his short, brutal, kitten-filled life.

An ecstatic, eyeless dwarf child gleefully clapping away at kittens that are no longer there? If this was some game other than DF, I would have doubts.

Despite the fact that this thread got necro'd out of nowhere, this is a great quote.
