Actually, in some ways there ISN'T a difference between those, other than one being more optimized than the other.
One is not more optimized than the other.  One is merely a recording of the other.  It cannot be edited with the same degree of freedom available to the first.

Going back on Shrek as an example:  To the dvd, a tree obscured by Shreks head doesn't exist.  Only Shrek's head exists at that point in time.  To the programs used to construct a full-cgi movie, the tree does exist, as a collection of polygons in a position relative to shrek.

It's like the difference between 2D and 3D, Armok.  No matter how good a photo is, you can always tell it's not the real deal.  You can see that it's flat.

I know those things, I ado 3d modeling myself, I simply assumed that the program in uestion didn't accsept input because that's the situation that is relevant to the discusion.

Impossible.  Memes are mindless.  A thought requires a mind.

Also, while I respect that you have experience of 3d modeling (compared to my lack thereof, only vague knowledge), I must point out that is simply not physically possible.  Computers can only get so small.  To have stored all the information in the universe would take more matter than is in the universe.  Computers don't just have a magical ability to store information that is mysteriously inscribed on them.  Every piece of data on your computer has some physical component.  This means it has a limit.

Yes, but you're ignoring the poisibility of compression and abstraction, many systems in the universe can be simulated by MUCH less computing power than you could build out of them. Also, I don't see a reason why an integer counting the number of layers should be needed: just always assume infinity.

There was this interesting bit in Dinosaur Comics where T-Rex said that eventually, we'll all have virtual universes to play with, where we can all be kings of the world. And as such, the chance is great that we are in fact in one of these many, many universes and not in the one true one.
Which brings up the question: Does thinking make you real?

Thinking is even less real. It is an illusion given by a complex electro-chemical system. In fact... one might consider one's mind to itself be a simulated universe. Oh how things have changed since Descartes...

Has anyone here watched The Thirteenth Floor? Trust me, this question is relevant to this discussion.
