They did it....
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:38:45 pm »

I made a tower to help my dwarves shoot incoming enimies, the design was nice, i could not find flaws in it and made sure they would not leave the corner constructions of the walls unreachable, and then, my dwarves found a way to get themselves stuck. First they walk along a straight line of floors, then build a wall in front of them, and a wall in back of them......5 of them got stuck this way so far.

Dwarves are passivly suicidal.

Rather than try to fight their tenancies I just overbuild my projects. If the wall is covered in stairs or ramps they can't screw themselves. You could give the whole thing catwalks too. One of my friends prefers to just buildup gradually.

Code: [Select]
X
XX
XXX

With stairs every now and then if you get my drift.

Easiest way to build tower walls is to build the floor first and remove it afterwards, two strips at a time. For walls though there's still a chance they'll be unable to do corners so what I do is this:

Code: [Select]
Before:
......
......
......
......
......
......

First designation:
OOOOOO
......
......
......
......
OOOOOO

Second designation:
OOOOOO
O....O
O....O
O....O
O....O
OOOOOO

That way they won't get stuck trying to do the corners. I think the wiki suggest a slower method of doing the corners first then making 4 more designations to finish the walls but I haven't checked for a while.

Dorfus, if you'd have read the post, you'd know that corners weren't the problem. The dwarves sutckinated themselves on a straight stretch of the wall.

Anyway, it can be cured by way of placing walls gradually. Dwarves won't choose to work on tiles, where somebody is standing at the moment.

Yeh but having to check back every minute to remake walls is annoying, anyway this was just a story not a request for help so no suggestions needed. Just your usual dwarvin stupidity.

Halceon, if you'd read my post you'd know that I knew that. I said that the best way to build a tower (so as to avoid dwarves walling themselves on an edge) is to build a floor first and remove it afterwards. With an interior floor the dwarves can't get stuck between walls as they can step onto the floor. It results in less designations as you can designate entire strips of floor to be removed, if desired, afterwards.

Of course, using the floor method has its own problems, namely that they sometimes leave themselves unable to build corners. That's why I posted my method which is nice and quick for the user and safe for the dwarves.

Would collapsing a 5x5 floor inside a 5x5 tower be a good idea? smashing all the floors out of the way at once without damaging the walls?

Step one: Build the outside walls with exit holes
Step two: Build the inside walls, leaving exit holes
Step three: Build the corners, using constructed stairs (square) or using the design shown above (octagon/circle)

And, if you have walls to walk on, just build floors on the interior edge, one or two spaces of 'em. You will NEVER get a dwarf stuck that way.

Up/Down stairs are the usual scaffolding for building high walls.  It's faster to get up to the top and they can be deconstructed afterwards without dwarves falling to the ground below.

If you designate the corner tiles last they will be built first.  So designate everything but the corners then designate the corners.
