I agree, if only because of how easy it'd be to put at least a simple fix it.

Have it so it's set up in an equation like (+-a)x^n, where x is the base value of whatever it is they liked/disliked (50 for viewing a table, or whatever), a is the modifier (how significant was it, very nice chair, death of a wife, etc.), and n changes depending on how far away it is. n =, say, 5, when it just happened, but only 2 after a half a year.

Then sum all the values, and have some sort of value threshold, where anything >1000 is happy, >10000 is very happy, etc. This way, you get a "decay" of sorts, while still maintaining eating a legendary meal a year ago being higher than see a rat yesterday.

Or, to reduce computations, it could be done this way:
A dwarf has a happiness number (say, between 0 (suicidal/berserk) and 100 (ecstatic)). If something happens, take x% of that number, add a rating for the event relative to 100-x%, and you have the new happiness of the dwarf. x is higher when the event is more important. The rating is 0/10 for something depressing, like your spouse being eaten by elephants, 10/10 for something heavenly, like a nice dining room  ;)
This way, the impact of past events gradually fades, and I think the formula is relatively fast because it doesn't need powers and little multiplication.
