Proposal for a MAME cabinet
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:49:32 am »

Hi there,

So a few months ago I got a little bit of an itch to make my own MAME cabinet.

I went as far as identifying the means of obtaining the controls necessary,

http://www.happcontrols.com/

And more importantly for the 'Creative Projects' purposes of this forum thread, I went ahead and figured out how I would build the box.

http://www.zen102301.zen.co.uk/Test/mamecab.pdf

Which is something that I thought I would like to share. I put a certain amount of work in to this and it just sits in My Documents, getting more and more forgotten about ...

Please feel free to openly discuss and criticise my engineering prowess if you deem it the correct course of action.

Also please, for those of you who have built one of these yourselves, please let the world know, I, for one, would be thoroughly impressed!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thanks!

Make it so when you push a secret button sequence (konami code maybe?) a keyboard slides out and you can play DF, then it would be win.

Or you could just make it DF by default.
A DF game console would be killer.

Yes, good ideas indeed!

Do you think Toady would change the code so that it's possible to play only if you put in credits?

"It is now summer, please insert coins to continue .... 10 ... 9 ... 8 ... 7 ..."

Hmm...

Well, doesnt it pause when that happens? You could let it detect when it happens (probably throught the DF memory hack lib) then lock out input until credits are inserted.

When I go to an arcade, I secretly wish to find this sort of a game there.
It would appeal to the eight year old super-nerd,
and the intellectual college student also.

Instead, I find a giant plastic mock-up of a helicopter seat,
and a big hand-brake style joystick with a trigger on it.

That is the sort of thing DF would have to compete with.
