For some reason nothing feels more like true DF wildlife than the hoary marmot, a real world creature.

It epitomises DF wildlife. In real life it has skills given to it by evolution that allow it to live, but in DF it is an animal that has extreme trouble keeping itself alive, killable to the extreme. It would be extinct would they not constantly wander in from their native home, "The Edge", a place where it seems all beings live in peace.
