Building an object requires you to scroll through a huge list of stone, then blocks, then wood, then bars. It would be nice if you could select the type of material then go through a list of that instead of having to dig through stuff you don't want to get to what you do.

Good idea - I always thought this would be helpful but was too lazy to post about it.  :)

All the scrolling is especially annoying if you're trying to get to your blocks, since they show up between the raw stone and the wood, and I typically have a lot of both. It would be nice if dark and light stone had their own categories as well.

Yes, but just in case you didn't know, it's such a good idea that it's been mentioned before.  However I do think it's worth mentioning again  ;)

There are two places I'd like to see something like this. The first is where the OP mentioned: in the list of materials -- and the other is in the Trade Goods window (specifically the one where you move goods to the Trade Depot). My Craftsdwarves produce a shedload of stuff and scrolling through umpty-ump pages of stuff to find what needs to be moved to the Trade Depot can be a real pain. (And yes, I know that's been suggested before too)

I'd like the stone/blocks/bars to be displayed grouped, such as:

Schist (30)
Marble (15)
Granite blocks(112)
Maple Logs (96)

.... admittedly you then couldn't choose to use a specific piece of schist or granite or whatever, which can be useful if you have some inaccessible stuff. But for most cases, it'd be nifty.

A simpler stopgap would just being able to jump to the top of each section.  For instance, instead of having to scroll through all the stones (or backwards through all the logs) to reach my blocks, I could hit a button and be at the top of the block list.  Even a button that just let me go forward and back for each kind would be helpful.

At the same time, the game will tell you if it's inacessable, so all you have to do is exclude them from the list.
