Sand should also be a building material when mixed with a small amount of water.

Sandbags would be a great addition. After all, we have the bags and we have the sand. Kicking up sand or throwing sand in an opponents eyes would be great options in combat as well. Maybe give you a reputation as a dirty fighter...

I don't see why it shouldn't. An inch-thick slab of rubber will stop a longbow arrow. It won't even slow down a crossbow bolt though... But I think a couple of layers of sandbags would do the trick.

Yes please, and also as ballista ammo (the equal of bean bags fired from a shotgun)</STRONG>

Are we talking about crowd control weapons here? Like, against tantruming dwarfs?

My most immediate thought for a non-standard use for sand was catapulting sand bags for AOE blindness effects. Sandbags would also be great for soaking up water in flooded areas so that 4 deep water square could be made 3 deep and passable without swimming with the use of a sandbag.

I wonder what sort of obsidian you would create IRL if you smothered a half-full pool of magma with sand and let it solidify? (not concerned about the logistics, just the amalgamated material, anyone?)

Sand might also be used to polish statues, carved floors/walls, woodwork, perhaps?

I remember in The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant they used sand in place of water for cleaning the body, like personal hygiene sand.

Can it also be used to help break up thick clay in the ground in some way? (to make it usable for farming)

You'd probably slow the cooling by a fair amount if you did that. Assuming it was a rhyolitic flow (obsidian), you'd most likely get rhyolite covered with a fairly thick cap of glass if the sand is silica. Sands of other minerals might be more interesting.

edit: Or maybe it'd speed it up. Hmm. Air is probably less heat-conductive than sand.

Hurtloam. I loved that series, if for nothing else but the setting.   :D

No no, not even Hurtloam, though you have now made me think anew about Dwarven healing!
