Invaders not drowning

I'm a little confused with this one. Even if you know how to swim won't you drown if you're in an enclosed space filled with water? As one of my traps I pump water into an underground tunnel and just watch them drown... or not. It seems most of them drown but a few learn to go without air or something. Very odd.

Either some of your invaders don't need to breathe (which should be verifiable by checking their entry in the creature raws), or the water level wasn't high enough. I mean, even a dwarf will be able to survive in a water level of 4/7, so that might conceivably be higher for taller creatures.

7/7 some of them drown and die. Others drown for a while and then stop drowning. I guess maybe they're so tall that if they learn to swim in time, they can remain safe due to a bug. (This is modded). 7/7 in an enclosed space should mean that they're kinda screwed for air.

Go to the z-level above, channel downwards, fill that level with water too.  That kills everything, even the fish.
