My dwarves are getting goofy moods
« on: December 04, 2009, 01:40:11 am »

I don't remember this happening before the Dxx builds but I was really new to the game then, but now a lot of my moods are happening to peasants or dwarves with unrelated skills- My master brewer with no other non-social skills just got a fey mood for bonecarving, for example.

Also, it seems almost like the artifacts are influenced by some kind of pregenned seed, whenever I start a new fort it seems I either get 90% 'possession' and useless junk(ash idol that menaces with spikes of ash, etc) or 90% fey/secretive awesome stuff(150,000 dorfbux coffin, etc).

Don't quote me, but I believe the choice of who gets the mood is random; the only thing that is predictable is what they'll become afterward. My last fortress had at least 3 legendary bonecarvers this way, and my current one has a legendary engraver. However, he's been relegated to stonecrafting duty, due to lack of creativity, while my bored-by-reality immigrant is training up by smoothing the whole fort. Masterwork mugs in short order in the second year, though, make for a fantastic start.

Even if you have dwarves decked out in cotton candy they will still have fun with clowns.

Read up on "moodable" versus "non-moodable" skills. Your brewer unfortunately can't create artifact quality booze, so they take over a craftsdwarf's workshop and make something in one of the crafting skills. I find what skill they use is determined by what is nearby, so try to keep some bone or stone next to your craftsdwarf workshops, so you don't get *$!#ing woodcrafters.

To try to get more useful skills, give all of your haulers elementary training in the moodable skill of your choice. Giving them all dabbler weaponsmithing for example, assuming that is their highest moodable skill, significantly increases your chances of getting a legendary weaponsmith and artifact out of the mood.

The dwarf that gets the mood is a random lottery system.  Save scumming will give you a different dwarf getting a strange mood.  I think preferences will affect which of the 3 skills your non-mooded dwarf uses, but I could be wrong.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Your findings are likely coincidental, as the type of mood (and the skill that will get an EXP boost) is determined the instant the dwarf is taken by the mood, not when they reach the workshop - in the case of dwarves without moodable skills, the crafting type is determined either based on the dwarf's preferences (e.g. if they like a type of bone, they might make a bone craft) or entirely by random.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I know preferences affect what they make, but I don't think it affects which one they choose of those three.

It can also change how they go insane when they fail, I only noticed this by accident when my comp went bluescreen of death for some reason, but I wasn't far into spring, so nothing was really lost. It can change what they produce sometimes.

I think moods are random as well. Some things I've noticed:

I restarted a fort in the same location.

a) Got a different Baron and Baroness Consort the 2nd time around, but the same King, Queen Consort and Advisor. Immigrants were different too.

b) Got several sieges in the first 5 years the first time around but just a few ambushes ansd thieves the 2nd time, despite the fortress worth being much higher.

c) If you get a mood, savescum to just before the mood, and play the savegame hoping for another mood: It may come eventually but it is most likely to be a different dwarf

Immigrants are always random, so no surprise there.

As for b, did you have the same goblin civ? It could be possible that since there are more than one goblin civ at about the same distance (no idea if it goes for the absolute closest or something) from you, you probably got a different one.

It can also be possible that since the same goblin civ showed up both times, but they had killed off some of their forces, so it takes longer to start sieging.

King/Queen and Advisor are always the same since that is from world gen.  You'll notice they have no preferences.
