How to find a fortress location...
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:13:16 am »

hey dorfs

i recently struck gold so to say

i found myself an embark location that has it all

bauxite, magma pipe, underwater pool, brook, lots of above ground trees, lots of magnetite - and sand

but i never wrote down the embark location, so while i do want to share this awesome fortress location with you guys, I dont know how to find again.

help me out?

Assuming you still have the savegame:

1. Load the game and abandon the fortress (you might want to make a backup of save folder first).
2. Start a new game in Legends mode and choose your world.
3. Export generation statistics for the world (don't remember the exact key but it should be right there on the very first screen you see after loading Legends).
4. Find the resulting worldgen text file in your DF folder and post it.

This is not yet enough to find where exactly the location is in your world, but given your description it shouldn't be hard to find out using sitefinder. You do remember the embarkation area size I presume?

Seems to be the way with things on this forum; if an invention doesn't involve death by magma then you know someone's going to go out of their way to make sure it does involve death by magma... then it gets acknowledged as being a great invention.

sitefinder... i use the mayday mod - sitefinder no like

but here's what i did do to find the site to begin with

i edited the ini file to always show magma pipes, pools and all the other stuff (underground water spots and HFS) on the embark map

then i manually searched the map

i have no clue where to find it again because of that

i was actually thinking - if i make a new embarky, then could i see/find where my good fortress spot is that way, by seeing on the map where the fortress is?

That should work. If you copy your DF folder (or just back up the save game so you don't lose your fort) then run it and abandon the fortress you should get a reclaim option which will jump you straight to your fort location :)

Then you can share the goodness with the world.

i found the spot - and the world is now stored in a 13mb Zip file

also included a screenshot of the location of the place

only drawback would be that my initial fortress construction is there already... nothing drastic - plus its a well picked fortress location (in a valley, near the brook, for easy moat action.

good times.

where to upload/share it???

Man, that site sounds delicious. Is there adamantine ?
And we don't actually need  saves - just press 'Esc' while your fortress is loaded, select 'export local image' in menu, select one layer (to make it fast, but you can export more) - Export. In your DF folder a text file will be created with fortress' name as a part of a title, that contains seed information (but not the one with world history). Just post it here.

hmm, that 10x10 spot is a bit too big for me, I have found another nice spot to embark on that worldmap though, if you search for magma pipe, HFS and flux on a 6x6 spot, It has no trees, but with a little resizing, you can get sparse tree-growth.
So now I've got a pretty nice spot :)
