Since we're asking oddball questions, is there a way to make a stone layer drop edible stones called meat which could then be cooked?

Yes, I want a meat mountain.

(Actually this is related to my as-yet unfinished metal world mod, where you can (hopefully) eat stone and everything is metal or crystal.)

If you let it be cooked in a smelter using a [reaction] then yes :)

And I thought I already said this, but you cannot modify what type of item is left behind by mining. It's always stone, or nothing in the case of soil layers.

And the stones can't be edible either.

[MATGLOSS_STONE:MICROCLINE]
[NAME:microcline][COLOR:3:7:1][TILE:'%']
[ENVIRONMENT:ALL_STONE:CLUSTER:100]
[IGNITE_POINT:9000]
[MELTING_POINT:12000]
[BOILING_POINT:12768]

so THIS will start a flash fire that eventually melts, shortly followed by dissipation?

I didn't know that things which combust will eventually evaporate if the boiling point is low enough.

That would indicate that fire itself raises the temperature of the item, rather than the fire-reaction simply being started if ambient temperature reaches combustion point (which is more like how things work irl).

I'd be leery of it until I saw it in action; the same goes doubly for
[MATGLOSS_STONE:MICROCLINE]

[ENVIRONMENT:ALL_STONE:CLUSTER:100]
[IGNITE_POINT:9000]
[MELTING_POINT:12000]
[BOILING_POINT:12768]
causing combust -> melt -> evaporate.

Experiments please!

Give it [MELTING_POINT:NONE], Barbarossa. I think that ought to stop some wierdness.

First I'll be testing it this way. Plan: set dwarves to [SPEED:0] and perforate ANY landmass EVER.

Hopefully they catch aflame. If this doesn't work, I'll take off the melting point.

You could make a reaction to produce it in a smelter, out of something quick and close to hand. Like a kitten

Or nothing.  Nothing is very quick and convenient.

Turns out that the rocks catch aflame and eventually decay, but do not melt or light things on fire easily. Thoughts?
