I checked: I have bituminous coal available, and I can't add the "make coke from bituminous coal" tasks in smelters.

Has the savegame you're using been moved around, like between different DF installs or players?

I started the game in 40d (it was working well there). Now I tried to move the 40d data files into the 40d16 folder, and accidentally deleted my savegame. :(

Now I make another world in 40d16 and see what I can do.
