The thread for all things freeware
« on: December 09, 2009, 09:28:54 pm »

Ever found a neat little gadget online that seemed so insignificant, but made your life oh so much better? If so, then you should post it on this thread! That's right, this is the thread where you can post anything freeware! Give the title and URL of the resource, then give a short description of what it does and a little personal review, i.e. why you thought it was so great, ect.

Please be aware that this is the INTERNET, you have a chance of getting a virus or a trojan from downloading something. That being said, always virus-scan all your downloads.

Guess I'll start then. My first of two items was a nice little app that I downloaded today... it's called Hot Key Plus, and can be downloaded <a href="http://www.brianapps.net/hotkeyplus/>here. The app is a program for Windows that runs from your taskbar. It completely eliminates the need for desktop icons. Essentially, whenever a certain key sequence is pressed (example sequences are Win+I, Alt+3, Shift+Q, Ctrl+F9, et cetera) Hot Key Plus will then open a predetermined file, folder, or executable. Not only does this little app make finding my favorite programs (especially Dwarf Fortress) much much easier and more convenient, it allows you to clear up all that clutter on your desktop, allowing for a much cleaner, sharper look. It also makes use of the frequently despised Windows key. So go on, download <a href="http://www.brianapps.net/hotkeyplus/>Hot Key Plus right now!

Number Two is a very nice open-source, first-person shooter game called Cube 2, or Sauerbraten. The game doesn't run exclusively on Windows machines, but is actually compatible with Mac OS and Linux, as well! The game doesn't have stunning graphics, but they are far from ugly. The fast-paced gameplay is reminiscent of the Quake series. The real gem of Sauerbraten is its innovative engine, which creates map geometry based around various-sized cubes. This particular feature allows for on-the-fly map editing, literally at the press of a button. Maps range from simple arenas to massive industrial complexes; with the large number of textures at your disposal, the sky's the limit. The game allows for "bot" matches as well as PvP matches in a number of game types, including Free-For-All, Team FFA, CTF, InstaGib, and several others. There are a number of servers online, but you may have trouble finding enough people for a match. The gaming community is very friendly, quite the opposite of most online games. So, what are you waiting for? The download's less than 400 MB, go and play Sauerbraten!

(Hehh, I sound like an info-mercial.)

Also, if you're thinking about listing Dwarf Fortress on this list just to try to be clever, don't. Everyone else thought of it already.

One thing I notice about Freeware Virus or Spyware protection is at first they start off amazing and clearly supperior to many of the retail programs on the market.

Over time however this quickly changes and the program turns to mud. Hense Adaware.

I have a feeling your refering to Videogame Freeware.
