Aren't metalcrafters useless?
Unless you like chains.

I don't consider any of my legendary dwarves or artifacts useless.  A legendary stonecrafter is quite valuable early on in the game, especially if you have high quality stone like marble.

One of the drawbacks to having a dwarf go into a mood is that every once in a while you won't have the materials he needs to complete his project and he'll go insane.  In this state he can potentially harm or kill other dwarves and if he doesn't drown himself in your water supply or jump off a tall building he'll eventually die of hunger or dehydration.  Always make sure you have at least a little bit of every resource to keep this from happening.
See Halltraded, year 305 for this.
Oh god, so much blood.

Masterwork Steel (or Gold) goblets are worth 3600 dwarfbucks apiece. A hell of a lot more efficient than making them out of stone - even obsidian is worth only 10% of that, and if you have coal (or wood) and flux then it's trivial to turn all of your goblinite into steel.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Legendary woodcrafters can churn out high quality bolts, which is useful if you use the quantum quiver trick.

If you're going to be making gold goblets just for the value, it's often a lot simpler to make native gold mugs. On the other hand, a metalcrafter can be nice for making goblets out of [random metal] to satisfy noble production mandates.

As an aside, has anyone ever seen an already legendary dwarf get a strange mood? So far it hasn't happened to me. If being non-legendary is part of the requirements for strange moods, then training every dwarf in my fort to legendary pump-operator might not be such a good idea.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

The only time a legendary dwarf got a mood in one of my forts, it was fey yet he didn't get any experience in the relevant skill. A bit of a let down, really.

I have, twice in this fort. My woodcutter/carpenter, legendary in woodcutting, got a mood and became a legendary carpenter as well. My legendary engraver also got a mood, and came out of it a legendary engraver. Might have been +5 legendary, but I'm not certain. OTOH, I did mod the hell out of this game, so YMMV.

Are you sure? In order to make native gold mugs, you need to mark gold nuggets as non-economic (and suspend your masonry tasks, especially if you're churning out rock blocks) and then make sure that there aren't any other stones near your craftsdwarf's workshop(s). By comparison, making golden goblets is as simple as adding a task at the forge. If you've got magma, making metal crafts is a clear winner over making them from ore - the only time it pays to make stuff out of native silver/gold/platinum/aluminum is when you're making furniture, since those would otherwise require 3 bars.

I always need a legendary metalcrafter to work metal images and decorations into things. It's great if your king can have a masterwork adamantine throne with some masterwork images in gold or something.

Are you sure?

Also, aren't ores of lower value than the metal they yield when smelted?

Not for native copper, silver, gold, platinum, or aluminum - their "nuggets" have the same material value as the refined metal.
