[40d] marksdwarves refusing to rearm

Hey, I have had this a few times now.

I have Urist McMarksdwarf shooting at orcs, they run out of ammo, there is an ammo stockpile with ammunition about 2 steps away but they do not rearm, I have to disband, re activate and put them off duty to rearm, does anyone know why this happens?

I'm going to go with "They decide to use the crossbow as a hammer if given anything resembling a reason. Even something that isn't a reason at all.", but I'm fairly certain someone else will be along shortly for a more thorough answer.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Do you have them set to chase enemies? If so, they're looking for a path to run up to the enemy and club it with their crossbows. If you have them set to stick to their station, then they should reload when they run out of ammo.

...Unless the enemies are less than 3 tiles away, in which case the marksdwarf will charge to bash them with his crossbowhammer even if he is ordered to stay at his station.

And they can't if they're behind fortifications right?
There are orcs behind fortifications. Like this i guess:

So, if given order to stand still, would they try to get to the orcs anyway, igven the entrance is not sealed, (since they are at less than 3 steps away) or would they rearm instead?

Mine decided to try to club them with had a similar situation.
