[40d16] Dwarves won't haul items, dump items or haul refuse.

My dwarves won't haul the goblin corpses littering my fort, their items or the stones I have marked for dumping.

It has nothing to do with the Orders screen, that's set so dwarves will haul refuse.  My dump piles are active.  All relevant labors are active on all dwarves.  The relevant items/bodies are not marked as forbidden.  Etecetera.

It's frustrating since miasma is stinking up the place and one of the goblin bodies is cluttering up my service-access door.

Are the items outside?  Are dwarves allowed outside?  Are dwarves set to haul outside refuse?

Yes.

Yes. But part of the problem is the refuse *inside* the fort.  Miasma.

I've experienced this. I believe it relates to unreachable items being marked for dumping.

I think what happens is e.g. you mark a stone for dumping, it later gets submerged in magma and is now unreachable and has turned into a glob, still marked for dumping. When the game gets to assign a hauler to dump that stone-now-glob, it can't find anyone who can reach it, but keeps looking for someone to handle it, never getting to the next item in the dumping list.

Try going through the inventory list (make sure you've got maximum precision counted) and un-marking anything from dumping, then re-mark whatever you want dumped.

Check the jobs screen -- are "dump item" jobs being generated?

I've also experienced this, but it was due to unreachable items being marked for storage in a stockpile (which was in the same unreachable area) - dwarves wouldn't haul ore to my stockpiles until I removed the inaccessible one.

So in effect, dwarves refuse to haul or dump anything else on account of a single unreachable or non-existent item?

I should mention that dwarves also won't haul bodies to refuse stockpiles, so it's not *just* a dumping problem.  They simply won't store bodies in the appropriate refuse pile.

Insofar as I know, I have no reason to expect anything to be "unreachable."

They're in there, but they're marked as "inactive."

Damn. Talk about obvious.  It turns out that one of the doors to the refuse room is locked.

That's solved both my dumping problem and my refuse problem.
