Plant descriptions that hint at what they are for
« on: October 02, 2007, 03:58:00 am »

Right now there's not much in the way of descriptions for plants.

I think that the description of the plants or seeds you brought with you should tell you all the details of what it's for. Presumably you brought them from their homeland, so you should be able to put them to good use without trial and error.

For other plant (,animals,...), that you find later on, the description could give you some hints on what it could be used for. I should be based on its appearance, not sound spoily.

Lastly, I think that any options related to plants or animals you don't know about should not appear on the workshop menus: it would make for more immersion, and an easier UI.

A botanics noble to enable the information of more exotic plants too perhaps?

This is a stack of X plump helmet that can be brewed into dwarven wine.

Like that?

Yeah, that would do the job. Of course it would be even better with a bit of background, such as: "Dwarves have been growing this plant for centuries... etc"

A physical description of the plant would also be nice.

Lastly, for plants you don't know very well, an example of an initial description could be: "Your miners found this plant in the caves. They don't know what it is, but it has been confirmed to be edible. It is rather sweet, so it could probably be used to brew alcohol or make syrup."

Yeah just what we need more nobles  :(

I say that once items in general have useful descriptions this should be one of the first things to be rectified.

For now, the Wiki is a pretty good source for such things.

Of course, but that breaks immersion completely.

Plus, I can't look at a wiki page without being spoiled on something I would have preferred to be surprised with. The game feeding you the information progressively would be so much better.

Yes, but, as Toady's said, that isn't happening until the game is more than a really basic alpha game.

Yes, DF is a really basic alpha game compared to what it will be.
I view this as very good news.
