"Horrors! Demons in the deep!" doesn't happen when the demons spawn - it happens when they are revealed from ambush. All of the demons spawn (in Ambush mode) the instant you discover the chamber (meaning they won't ever show up if you run reveal.exe), and some of them may sit around in the pit before deciding to march out and attack.

That ambush thing is news to me, does the [ENDER] tag naturally make them invisible like that? I always assumed that they spawn in waves

Damn, I'm going to have to be EXTRA careful with my Underworld special project... You have to channel out the entire area and fill the lowest with magma... So the question becomes do I just set up a bunch of traps to kill all the demons? (Like a hallway filled with bridges that drop when I'm sure they're there... or would that just break the bridge for the biggest demon? Would it also be possible to just let said demons out into the world without fighting them? Basically, how can I totally deconstruct that area without actually having to fight the demons?

Currently, I've located the general area of my HFS, and I'm exploring the limits of the 'funhouse' by smoothing the walls of my exploratory tunnels and carving Fortifications in them. Once I've got it completely scoped-out, I am considering sticking up a lever-controlled Support, under-mining that entire block of rock, channeling it loose from its surroundings, and caving it into the hole I dug for it. Will a drop of one level (followed by any general collapse that operation triggers) be enough to whack the uglies inside?

However, just a 1 z-level drop will barely stun them. I don't even think an 8 z-level drop would kill a demon. Maybe more than that, idk.

Since I'm planning to drop the entire HFS complex as a single unit, I was assuming that the funhouse roof would automatically collapse in on them... thus putting all the uglies inside beneath a cave-in. Don't open spaces within a caved block automatically collapse shut?

That is very clever! It never occurred to me to scout with fortifications. Could you drop a sacrificial dwarf into the room, then station marksdwarves at the fortifications to kill the now-revealed demons at their leisure? It seems a shame to waste the whole pit by collapsing it.

[spoiler] Personally I just liked talking about them as clowns, but to each his own. And that would and wouldn't work. Demons, unlike goblins, are revealed independently, so you would have to drop a lot of sacrificial dwarves in there. Though I suppose you could deal with tentacle and frog demons that way easily enough, unless the head Demon decided to attack.[/quote]

Well it would kinda ruin the effect to just leave them like that... I'll try for the sacrifical dwarf method to reveal them then let my marksdwarves just peg demons until kingdom come. That or just drop them all into magma assuming that they're not Fire Demons.

As too why we're spoilering everything. In case some newbie comes in by accident.

Instead of dwarves you could use sacrificial kittens, or puppies.. or anything else thats over populated your fort..
