On HFS and magma...
« on: November 20, 2009, 11:28:39 am »

I have 2 questions.

1.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

2. Would it be possible to build a working deathtrap with a single square of 3/7 magma? (other than a pit) For instance, if I made a "magma shower" that caused the magma to fall through a pressure-plate-activated hatch cover, through a floor grate, and pump it back up to the hatch, would any magma fall away from the grate, thus making the trap run out of "fuel" eventually? Also, would this be deadly? Because it would certainly be dwarfy.

dumping lava on pretty much anything sans stuff that lives in lava tends to hurt them

your idea sounds good - there might be some vaporization, so if you make your system so that you can add more magma to your loop you should be good

1. Not sure. You should test it and tell us the results.

2. Yes - as long as the tile of magma is never allowed to spread out (which it will only do if it is on a solid floor tile), it will never "evaporate".

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'm going to start testing both, but AFTER my first immigrant wave on this fort.

I want to sacrifice a Fishery Worker to frogclowns.

EDIT: With the masterwork engravings, etc. should I make the lowest level of the funhouse my throne room? (once it's "occupants" are dealt with.)

Okay, my results.

I started a new fort with the sole purpose of breaching the house of Fun.

I dug a RIDICULOUSLY massive cistern two levels above the top room, and stationed one of my miners (as a recruit) at the bottom of the staircase leading down from it. I channeled out a 2x2 area once the cistern filled (losing three dwarves to the underground river's locals. I swear, they all JUMPED in) and Operation: Down the Drain was officially started.

Sequence of events:

Miner climbed up into cistern. Ringmaster revealed himself and killed another miner. My first miner went into a RAAAAAAAAAGE!!! and killed the ringleader by herself (spoilered for violent assumptions)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tentaclowns revealed themselves, killed the miner, another miner, and half my kittens. Tentaclowns drowned, Path to HFS walled off, hermit fort begun.

End results:

# Clowns dead on unit list: 26 (ringmaster included)
Out of: 31.
Visible Corpses: 6
Humanoids dead: All
Out of: 147

Conclusions:

Draintrap more useful as a drowning trap. Few if any clowns were flushed.
Tantrumming legendary miners FTW
Solution ineffective against frogclowns and !!clowns!!:
Frogclowns: Can swim. Solution: Add more (like, metric ****loads more) water, flush them all.
!!clowns!!: Boil the water away before it reaches them, same solution as frogclowns (drain an aquifer if needed, infinite + comes in as high a quantity as you like!

EDIT: I sacrificed a half dozen dwarves FOR SCIENCE!

I'd recommend -against- routing an aquifer or other water source into a fire clown's fun place, the constant water movement and evaporation will hurt your fps much more then it will ever hurt them.

For the water based clowns, try magma.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

The other six clowns were STILL ALIVE in the pit, and were revealed (and slaughtered) by my hermit survivor, decked out in full Phlebotinous armor.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So, drown the tentacley pits, immolate the frog pits, and turn temperature off tor the !!Fun!!

On another note, my hermit seems to have a penchant for engraving the pit's contents'... relatives.

(I modded the !!clowns'!! raw entries so that they're actually called !!clowns!!. It's hilarious, as seen here.)

Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed image of two !!clowns!! by {Urist McEverything}.

I hope you realise you've given me a mental image of a TVTropes mod, with Phlebotinum and Green Rocks as minerals and Giant Space Flea megabeasts spawning out of nowhere.
