DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Make the clothes, and your dwarves will acquire them as they see fit.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I feel obliged to note that dwarves do not appear to object to nudidity; they get sad when their clothes wear out, and they wear off, they are not changed, and they probably get happy about finding new clothing, but in between they have no problems letting it all hang out. Presumably their beards are sufficient to avert total exposure.

People usually aren't too hot on making new clothes, since the dwarves just drop their old ones where they get the new ones, and only clean up after themselves if you give them cabinets and they feel like it. And, as mentioned, nudity is no problem except in extremely cold climates.

Most fortresses seem to be able to import large amounts of leather; leather clothing has lower value but better slightly armor rating IIRC.

How to make dwarves buy clothing? When the economy activates, build some shops and make sure some of them are clothing shops. I think it makes sense to build more than one clothing shop to get a good mix of available items.

Economy off fps problem
I feel obliged to note that it's the sheer number of dwarfs that you have to have in order to activate the economy that's doing that, not the economy itself.
