Computer Question
« on: November 28, 2009, 09:08:45 pm »

Is there any way for me to run Windows applications on a Mac?
Also, what would happen if I tried to install Ubuntu?

Specs:
Mac OSX 10.3.9
1.07 GHz PowerPC G4
512 MB DDR SDRAM
19.14 out of 37.13 GB available

You can't boot camp because it's not an Intel chip.

You could try a Virtual Machine program to see if you could get it to run, but with only 512mb ram it would most likely chug.

I don't know about Ubuntu, but since it has the live cd option you could always see if it boots of the disc, and if it works, then you could install it.

I probably could upgrade the ram, but I'm saving up to build another, much better computer.
This one is over six years old.

To be more clear, what I want to know with the Ubuntu thing is: what will happen to all my Mac stuff and how well will it run on this piece of shit.

The most annoying part about this computer is the damn PowerPC processor.
Nobody supports it and it just generally sucks.

With Ubuntu you can burn it to a CD and then boot straight off the CD. It will not do anything to the hard drive. If it runs, then fine install it, if not try something like puppy linux which requires less system resources.

If you do install it, Ubuntu should try and partition the hard drive into two parts. One part for itself and one part for the old mac installation. They even have a copy for PowerPc's. So you shouldn't lose anything, but just in case always back up.

That's good to know.
I'll get a CD next time I get up.
