How do I equip weapons I just got in adventure mode? I got a a legendary artifact sword from my fort and I cant use it even if im a proficient swordsdwarf.

I believe you need to be Legendary before you can use an artifact, but that may only be in Fortress Mode. Try 'w'.

I haxed to get legendary yet nothing! I also tried w(by the way this has happened to me with non legendary aswell)

You don't have to be legendary. Just make sure your weapon hand is free.
To be sure, make sure both your hands are free.

What happens when you pick it up?

They always worked like regular weapons for me, with the strange anomaly that if I threw or dropped it, it would disappear. No issue though, the artifact was still in the bin I found it in afterwards.

use p to put your normal sword into your backpack. if this doesn't work throw it on the tile you are on with t. now stand on the tile with the artifact sword and use g to grab it with your free hand. if it is allready in your backpack you can use r to remove it which will put it in your hand.

sounds more complicated than it is. its also in the wiki.

If all else fails, drop your weapon and your sheild then drop your artifact sword. Now pick the artifact up first and then the sheild and then the old weapon. Sometimes the game will make it so you're holding your sheild with your weapon hand and the sword with your bad hand. If this happens you 'll just bash people with the sheild and never use the sword.
