I had dwarves with that masacre berserk children in a fort breaking down from tantrums, who had half of their friends, children and family killed and who were 'quite content' with thier lives.

Well, that's not terribly abnormal. I mean, this is the normal dwarven psychology: "Oh dang, my wife and six children have been brutally murdered by goblins, I'm unemployed and homeless, and a cave-in/magma accident/what-have-you just killed my best friend but GEE THIS DINING ROOM SURE IS SWELL!

Seriously. Huge-ass dining rooms are like dwarven Prozac.

Once assigned, pets cannot be unassigned, reassigned, or butchered.

What happens if their owner dies?

A while after the owner dies you can butcher the animals.

This is why I introduced martial law with a nice execution chamber for any dwarves who brought cats into my fortress, my primary export was cave spider silk and the cats ate the damned cave spiders. Even a kitten would kill off huge amounts of spiders in almost no time at all! .. the owner was executed and the cat butchered as soon as possible.

The crossbow squad, 'The Bolts of Fleeing' wouldn't even show up.

Then get big spiders. I've got three different types of web spinning giant spider ready to provide me with soft, luxurious silk (as soon as I catch an elf in my cage traps). Cats (or in my case, jumping lizards) can eat all the mini spiders they like.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
