You could do it with itemcorpses, though the armor might always be large.
However, if you killed a dwarf that had the token:
[ITEMCORPSE:ARMOR:ITEM_ARMOR_CHAINMAIL:METAL:GOLD]
[ITEMCORPSE_QUALITY:5]
would the resulting gold chainmail be the same size as the creature it came from?

Or just add the [ARMOR] and [WEAPON] tags into the Matgloss_metal file for Gold. That works too. (You'd have to add the [ARMOR] one in for silver too)

Better late than never, but what about giving the military low-quality weapons when off-duty? Just remember to switch when bringing them back to the front line. Works fine for me.
