nope, i'm not telling a story, I'm asking questions.

No you aren't. The only questions in your posts are rhetorical or you have answered on your own. You are basically just posting what your fortress is about, and wondering openly to yourself what you should do. Anything that might be a question on there isn't. You are posting ideas for what you want to do, and not asking any questions. If you do indeed have questions, don't post your entire fortress schematics and layout, just ask them. We will help you if you ask questions, but you aren't, so this thread belongs somewhere else.

Remember this? Yeah, this isn't the right forum.

Let me go through and highlight a few of the questions I've asked that I've not had answered for you.

"how do I keep my drwarves from being on the wrong side of a wall they are constructing"

"Should I be worried about my military this early"

"dwarves dump other is chunks from butchers and what else?"

just to re-ask the last three I've not figured out yet.

Oh, and thanks DaPatman for the solid answers before, i really am rather bad at this, so I'm glad you helped.

"how do I keep my drwarves from being on the wrong side of a wall they are constructing"

Designate walls to be constructed on the tiles you don't want your dwarves standing on, then suspend the construction (q on an unbuilt wall, then s).

It's never too early to start thinking about military, but if you've only got a couple of dozen dwarves, then you probably don't need to think about it too much unless you plan on taking out the HFS stupidly early on.

I think it's just chunks and rotting stuff, though I may be wrong on this.

I'm always happy to help a new player learn the +pig tail ropes+.

One way I found to keep dwarves from building walls from the wrong side is to obstruct the spot they would stand on.  Like build a wall on that spot, or dig a hole.  Not a perfect, useful at all times idea, but it's all I've got D:

Sorry, I should elaborate I suppose - the questions are about gameplay, and while nobody's really that strict about asking them in this forum, the rest of your posts have basically been you writing your stream of consciousness as you play out your fort. You don't appear to be posting solely to ask questions - for example, of what relevance is the fact that your metalsmith got a mood?

Not that you can't narrate out what's going on in your fort and how you're dealing with it, but it's simply not the right forum for it.

Did that, that's what I thought I was meant to do to keep the dwarf from reenacting a solo version of the casque of amontillado....

He still walled himself into the magma tube and got fried.  I thought I'd said that.  Any idea why it didn't work?  Was it because the point I wanted them to build from was diagonal?

It was. Dwarves will always build from somewhere orthogonal to the thing they're building, unless they're building stairs, in which case they can also stand directly above or below, depending on context.
