What are the most amazing free, downloadable or not, defense/tower defense games you have ever played?

I know you said free, but the only defense games I've played that I found amazing are:

Plants vs. Zombies
Defense Grid: The Awakening
Gratuitous Space Battles

I'd love to know of any free ones that are any good as well, though!

Well, The Last Stand 2 was great fun.  Zombie-shredding with added scavenging aspects (for both new weapons and helpful survivors).  Another fine example would be the Storm the House series (I think it's up to #3 now), allowing you to upgrade your base with automated defenses that serve various roles.

One thing though with Storm the House...  I don't know if it's still valid, but it used to be that there was really only one weapon worth having.  Namely, the grenade launcher.  All other beefy weapons were pathetic when compared to the speed, power and range of the 'nade launcher.

There was another zombie-shooting game I tried a while back...  It was endless, and boasted increasingly more powerful zombies as time went on.  It was also brutally hard, unless you know which weapons to upgrade with.

With the proper allocation of points and some good shooting early on, you could make yourself effectively invincible.  Then it was just a matter of splattering THE ENTIRE GODDAMN MAP with zombie bits.  Speaking of which, the game boasted some very nice environmental graphics, showing off blood spatters, shell casings, explosive burns and other markings.  Unfortunately, the name escapes me for the moment.

An example of a nice defense game for me would be D-Fence or D-Fence 2.

In that case, yeah.  Storm the House would be your best bet.

Played it. I'm looking for under the radar super games, like dwarf fortress.

and isn't warcraft a game you have to buy?

The zombie game whose name escapes you is endless zombie rampage. He just released a sequel which features a PATHETICALLY easy story mode. I haven't tried its endless mode yet, but if it behaves like story mode at all, it should be easy as well.

Elona Shooter is pretty fun.

Base Invaders is another good choice. Flashy graphics and a centralized tower that must be defended from all sides makes it VERY hectic, just wish there was an option to pause it like once every 5 minutes to place stuff for like 3 or something. Making a nice, balanced defense goes out the window when you need the crap NOW.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

If you've got UT3 there's a mod for it called Sanctum that's kind of cool.

beorn080 and ductape:  Yep, it's indeed EZP.  Don't know which version I played though, most likely the first.

dogstile:  Like I said, I don't know if that point is valid in all versions.  However, in the one I remember playing most, the grenade launcher was by far the best weapon in the arsenal.  The big UFO gun was far too slow (both to reload and to fire), the giant gatling gun couldn't hit a thing, did too little damage and took an eternity to reload, and all the other advanced weapons I tried just couldn't match it.

Although it wasn't top dog in any of the categories (damage, speed, clip/reload), the combination it had was the most efficient killing machine on the market.

Oh, and there's the stickman defense game 'Defend Your Castle'.  Interesting gameplay mechanic, but it can get to be tiresome (you have to toss people around and make them splatter when they hit the ground).

Aside from that, I recommend you just try a search for defense games.  There are some sites that specialize in those, although Flash game searches are admittedly rather poorly done.  It's very difficult to find anything of use.
