I know that making silk in the smelter freezes the furnace operator to death, apparently because it lacks a MATGLOSS entry and uses a BP of 0 Dwarfdegrees, so be sure to back up your fortress before trying to make cow cheese that way.   :)

I made smelter silk yesterday and can't confirm that. The dwarf in question is perfectly alive.

EDIT:
slink: after looking at that, you're doing it wrong. It has to be:
Code: [Select]
[PRODUCT:100:3:CLOTH:NO_SUBTYPE:SILK:SPIDER_CAVE]
[PRODUCT:100:3:CLOTH:NO_SUBTYPE:PLANT:REED_ROPE]
[PRODUCT:100:1:THREAD:NO_SUBTYPE:PLANT:GRASS_TAIL_PIG]

I'm surprised that DF handles nonexistant subtypes/matgloss tokens so elegantly at all. Toady did good work there.

EDIT 2:
After second thought, I made Cave Spider -Thread- in the smelter yesterday. I don't know if making cloth instead would've killed him or not. I'll try that later.
