engraving constructions?
« on: November 10, 2009, 09:40:06 am »

I'm obsessed with engraving everything I make. I'd like to try building an above ground fortress, but it makes me sad that I won't be able to engrave my dwarve's rooms. Is there any way to engrave constructions? a mod, something?

This is probably why there is so much interest in casting obsidian.

I've heard of no such mod or workaround otherwise :(

Tweak had the ability to set designations on whatever you want, so you might be able to do it that way :)

Also, there's some bug that if you designate an area to be smoothed or engraved, and then dig it out room beneath using ramps, the designation will stay.

If you make constructions out of blocks, it increases the value. Also, you will have a "Gabbro Block Wall" instead of a "Rough Gabbro Wall."

Rock blocks are made at a Mason's workshop, wooden ones at a Carpenter's workshop, glass ones at a glass/magma forge, and soap ones at an Alchemist's workshop. Don't bother making metal blocks, bars are already the same value.

There's talk of being able to add engravable material to constructed walls, like plaster or cement, but for the time being your best bet is to use fancy-pants materials, like microcline blocks, to increase their value.  Of course, that's not the same as an engraving, but if you want to have pictures of stars and burning goblins all over the place, you can always make bags out of cloth or leather, sew images on them, and then construct them as a "container" furniture type to spruce up the room.

If you do the bag thing, be sure to forbid the bags. (d-b-d)
Otherwise, your dwarves will waste time looking in all the bags for personal items.

d-b-d is "dump", isn't it?  Shouldn't it be d-b-f?  Thanks for the tip, anyway, I think that might have something to do with my loss of productivity lately.
