ok so i have a river FULL of salmon. so i want to make a little underground spot where my fisherdwarfs can fish them without going all the way to the lake? so how do i build it? i know how to build the spot where the water builds up. i just need to know how to make a spot for them to fish and catch them.

From the main screen, go to zones (i). Press enter once to start designating your zone, then press (f) for fishing, then move the cursor and finish designating the zone. Make sure that there is at least one tile on land and one tile above the water. I suggest making two or three so your dwarves don't have to stand on top of each other.

Then, from the main screen again, go to orders (o) and zones (z). Press (f) to toggle the option "Prefer zone fishing" to "Zone only fishing."

If you're not on a brook, you might want to build vertical bars (b->B) in the channel to prevent carp and the like from getting in and terrorizing your fisherdwarves.

EDIT: If you're a new player, be aware that many fish will SLAUGHTER your dwarves. Check the <a href="http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Carp>Wiki article on Carp[/url] to see what I mean.

Channeled water areas will likely only contain turtles.  You'll need to actually fish on the river/stream for your fish.  If you want it to be safe, just wall and floor off part of the river and set a grate or two.  IIRC your fisherdwarves can fish through grates.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

you need a channel wide enough. i once had an artificial river built through half of the screen, it was 3 to 5 tiles wide to ensure water flow, and it had fish there, getting in from the main stream

Did you actually verify fish were being pulled from the artificial river?  Vermin fish will appear to teleport around to any water on the map, but the visual appearance of fish in a water source doesn't mean you'll actually get anything other than turtles.

Also, to anyone trying to make a safe fishing area, a word of caution.  Carp will go right through fortifications like they weren't even there.

One thing carp can't go through are pumps, use them when making an artificial resevoir.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

no carps can go through pumps. my friend had his pump go straight up his base and in a middle of a siege a troll destroyed his grate and carp went through the pumps and broke them and flooded his base. it didnt look pretty. lol
