Tube of death - works?
« on: November 06, 2009, 03:33:56 pm »

An idea I had. Pretty simple.

I make a large verticle 'tower' - 1 square wide - and in the bottom i drop (from 1 Z-level) a goblin.

Then from 15 Z-levels or so, I drop another goblin, onto the same tile as the first one.

Question 1: Do you think it'll work? Will both get splattered?
Question 2: Does blood/body parts pass through Fortifications, Grates or Bars?

I think I heard that falling creatures get no damage if they land on a creature.
But I never tested it.

Apparently, neither will get splattered.

Not only will they pass through, body parts will get stuck inside of Fortifications.  You'll have to deconstruct them to get the rotting remains out.

I believe somebody recently determined that you need 16 z-levels for a guaranteed explosion-on-impact.

Me ? :P

I'm asking whether A-hits-B kills both or not.

Guess I'll experiment.

If the first goblin survives the fall long enough for the other goblin to land on him, the second goblin will not take any damage. At all. Super goblin.

I can vouch for the effects on this. I have three live-entity pit traps (so far):
1) Bottomless pit throwing
2) Arena pit)
3) Not-As-Bottomless-As-It-Looks Pit throwing. This one is a 18 z-level drop onto a simple platform.  The idea here is that things a) explode and b) leave behind goodies.  I did this to make sure goblins were robbed of metal equipment before I saw the [d]- tile-based melt designations.

Anyway, from this I threw a handful of goblins to the Bottom of the World.  Some hauler was moving stuff back when --BAM!-- he's hit in the head by a falling goblin at terminal velocity.  The result? Stunned. The "splat platform" is one tile wide and he was quite fine. Killed the goblin even, without dodging into a pit.

You need to position it right over the trade depot.

Aye, we are Armok, god of blood, evil, villager gutting, fortress building, legend making and elf thongs.

This is true. I made a huge tower, and then I noticed I had way too many cows - so I threw about 20 of them from the top. Imagine my disappointment when only three died.

Build several such tubes over your barracks and load them with goblins. The lucky ones would hit the floor and die immediately. The unlucky ones would get their fall, as well as every bone in their bodies, broken by angry soldiers.

17 z-levels is good... but frankly I prefer to have a little less tall. I don't like my goblins exploding, more clean up. What's the garunteed death height then? (but not explosions)

Idea: Tower of Miasma.

Basically, make one really tall 1x1 space tower of fortifications in an alternating fashion and drawbridges at different points of it (each at guaranteed explosion points). Make sure the stone used is nice and white, in order to see how much blood and gore sticks in it.

Pattern to use:
O+O --> +O+   O = Wall
+ +     O O   + = Fortification
O+O <-- +O+

When enough time passes, the rotting corpses should bellow out miasma. Hopefully, it won't fall down to the residents below. It's not meant to be entered, except for loading purposes. It may require one heck of a ladder to haul the victims up there, but it would be worth it.

Additional idea: Setup a shredder weapon trap at the bottom in case anyone's lucky enough to survive the plunge.

In case you really NEED the bones, you can always place a floodgate in as a door.
