unable to smelt bitumous coal

Just as the title says. I have a huge seam all dug out and ready in the mines, but niether (hermit family) of my dwarves are able to smelt it. It just does not show up in the smelting menu. I have charcoal availible to use, but only one, so no forging with that. Any Ideas on whats wrong? :-\

It fixed itself, somehow. Odd. well, now my hermits only need ore to melt.
