After tossing in lots of cats and horses (I got animals coming out of unpleasant places) I managed to reveal 16 Frog Demons... and my FPS didn't care, it's still at 16. I'm just going to start a new fort and this time I'll have the lava ready before the fun stuff is breached.

I also hit the Boss Demon first, partially, perhaps, because I struck HFS from below.  I'm on a 4x4 map with ☼-rated cliffs.  There's this corner of desert from which the mountains rise spectacularly and I couldn't resist making that my entrance.  The result was that I started 35 z-levels above the peaks.  I'm in a spot where I'm going to have to dig up to get to the rest of those buggers.  I just barely nipped the Glowing Pit shaft, and it's maybe ten z-levels up to the rooms.

I'm playing with HFS right now myself, only I decided to have a laugh with it and reveal the map so I could intricately dig around it all and the adamantine without triggering them, only now to fix the flags I know I'll break if I were to dig out the last bits I'm gradually tile editting it back to normal

Also I reccomend hatch covers or bridges, there is nothing quite like it for a safe seal from the dooms below

A weird approach but an interesting challenge in some ways when you just want to get on with it without worrying about military =P

The mere act of using reveal is enough to bust it.  You fort is done for. No HFS for you.

If you have a military you may be able to handle it the old fashioned way.  By just opening the pits into a well defended hallway with melee units up front and marksdwarves in the back, maybe even a ballista if you can find a way to fit it in.  Frog demons are the weakest of the demons.  Not having the heat of a spirit of fire or the multiple non-vital parts of a tentacle. 

That said though, they are still demons, twice the size of a goblin, and unable to tire. So do whatever you can to fortify the position to give your military the best chance.  Forcing the demons to follow a long path within marksdwarf range using channels would help if you have a lot of marksdwarves.  Making sure they have a nearby bolt stockpile will help as well.   Don't use only marksdwarves however.  There's usually more demons in a pit than that from my experience, so some will probably remain hidden until they make it all the way through your gauntlet and run into your melees.  At least SoF have the decency to exit ambush mode to throw a fireball when they get in crossbow range.

Oh and the moment you breach it properly, forbid EVERYTHING down there, including bodies from the upcoming fight, or else civvies will join in the fun to do some battlefield hauling.
