Everybody knows that bacon is a desert, so please no more talk of bacon.

Uum...

A... desert? So...
Something like Saharan? Or Antartica?

I always get those two mixed up (dessert and desert as opposed to the Sahara and Antarctica.)

Hmm, some of my favorites ...

1. Easy & cheap: Polenta

1a Italian version: Boil 4 cups water + 1 tsp Salt; add 2 cups Polenta flour, stir. Reduce heat to very low, keep stirring. After a while, pour the thick mixture into some form, and let cool. Cut into slices and fry these in butter or olive oil.

1b. Austrian version: Sterz. (Corn & Pig Tallow Stew!)
Boil 3 cups water + 1 tsp salt, add 2 cups Polenta flour, stir, turn off heat, don't stir too much. After some 30 minutes, use a fork to crumble the bright-yellow mass into smallish crumbs. Fry these in pork fat, and serve sprinkled with pork grits.

2. one of my favorite pasta variants ...
Grate 2 zucchinis, 4 toes of garlic. Sprinkle with salt, mash with your hands, wait 15 minutes. Squeeze the grated veggies hard like you would a mother-in-law's throat to remove as much water as possible. Heat olive oil, add some chilis, and some of the ground veggies, fry until parts of it turn lightly golden-brown, put onto a plate, repeat. (To do all of the veggies in one go you'd want a huge pan). Don't burn it or it'll be bitter. Cook short pasta like penne, fusilli or farfalle. Add the veggies. Shake. Serve with a Parmesan grater.

3. you have a deep fryer? I've seen people batter and deep-fry cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, and even mars bars. Remove the wrapper first. *g*
