Dark Dwarves in my generated world
« on: October 31, 2009, 09:36:51 pm »

Hi there. I had to register to ask this question.

I just generated a new world, and I was going around to see how it looked like. I found the "Dark Dwarven Fortress of Ngomosplu" situated between a serie of Dark Goblin Fortress (south), and Dwarven Mountainholds (north).

It's the first time I hear of this. Is it a normal/usual occurance? Is it a new race, or some strange world-generating consequence?

Please note that I use no mod.

Without a mod? It's a strange thing caused by worldgen. Embark and investigate!

The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Did you download your copy of DF from somewhere other than the bay12 homepage? I think the lack of dark dwarves in vanilla is fairly well researched  :-\

No. I just downloaded the most recent version from Toady's homepage of DF.

I exported the info from the world, and here what it says:

Ngonosplu: "Doomsculpt", a dark fortress
Owner: The Moist Paint, dwarves
Parent Civ: The Mansion of Twisting, dwarves (please note that the serie of Dwarvenhold I mentioned are all part of that civ)
Leader: Kib Rasplanterns, goblin
79 Goblins
1 dwarf

....
That is just weird...

"Embark and embrace?" I can embark directly in that Dwarvenhold, u think? ;-)

I'd be curious to hear what the story of the Dark Bastion of Ngomosplu is... Was it a traitor dwarf who lef the Goblins come in and take the Dwarves's legitimate place? That Fortress became rich by trading with the Goblins on one side, and with the Dwarves on the other (with the Traitor acting as the official face to the Dwarvenholds)

Or was it a clever trick of the Dwarves to accept refugees from the Goblinholds, and using that "Refugee Fortress" as buffer (read = Cannon Fodder) between them and the Goblins?

That is one strange occurance. If people would like, I could upload the generated world to let you download it.

How do you discover the legends of the world?

When you choose "begin playing" or start playing or whatever on the main menu, choose legends as opposed to dwarf fortress or adventure mode. It's kind of hard to read though.

So far, here what I have gathered...

- The Goblin settled there in 25. They proceded to build up and started to snatch babies around.. One dwarf settled in the fortress around 36.
- In 38-42, the Dwarves attacked 3 times the Goblin Fortress
- During 42-58 a lot of humans and dwarves immigrated to the fortress
- In 59 Saw another attack by dwarves
- In 60 a Titan killed quite a few gobbos
- In 62 Humans attacked the compound, they were beaten back with many losses.
- The dwarves attacked opportunistically in 63, and after 1 killed they were considered to conquer the Fortress. They set their overseer there. Many gobbos left while many Dwarves settled.
100-120: Many legendary creatures interefered with the Fortress. Dragons and Titans, mostly. Stealing stuff and killing people

That's about it. The dwarven children all got abducted over the years, so I guess it explains why there aren't more dwarves around...

Hmmm... there are more dwarves in Goblin-owned goblin fortress than in Dwarves-owned Goblin fortress...

You can also see Dwarf Forest Retreats and Dwarf Villages. Site names don't change when conquered, only the race. It's perfectly normal.

Oh.  I see the point of confusion now.  The "Dark" is an adjective for the fortresses, not the dwarves.

Yeah, its just a dark tower with dwarves that have taken it over.

You sometimes gets "Dark Human Towers" and such. Those are cool because the humans will build a human town in between the towers.
