Motherboard issue/question
« on: October 28, 2009, 06:42:35 pm »

My roommate's computer is, to say the least, a pain.  This has always troubled me some, as I built the damn thing some years ago.  I would set the stage by listing the niggling problems over time, but I'd probably just get angry.  Suffice to say, nothing surprises me.

Now, to the problem at hand.  One recurring problem has been, during POST, occasionally you'd get one long beep followed by two short beeps, repeating, with no video.  A hard shutdown and restart almost always worked.  Now it does not.  The MB is an Asus M2N-E and from what I've gathered, that code means a "video card or video adapter" error.  Various testing ensued, including a different video card, but the same error code occurs now with only the PSU/CPU/MB in the loop, everything else removed.  This leads me to believe a MB replacement is in order, as it can't be video card or anything else related

A day before this happened, the onboard ethernet developed a "network cable not plugged in" problem, out of the blue.  It had done this once before months ago, in which a system restore, driver update, driver rollback, nothing had an effect.  Then during one reboot, it randomly worked again (the previous time).

Does anyone else concur that the MB is most likely shot?  Obviously it is a bit old as it is, and we have some upgrades lined up, but he is going back to school so any spent money hurts a bit.  I thought I would ask here, as he is on fall break, and a solution is needed for next week when he returns to school.  Thanks for any input.

If you're getting the same beeps with just the PSU/CPU/MB then maybe you need to check the ram. I've found that generally the first thing that the MB does when it starts is check the ram.

Try changing the sticks about into different slots. It could be still be a MB fault, but at least it's something to try before you start looking at spending money.

First ten minutes of play I ate my loincloth and then got some limbs torn off by a super friendly rat. Thumbs up from me.

The beeps occur with all the RAM, no RAM, or any combination.
