I am at a loss.

I just got a belated birthday present from my sister. It was, much to my surprise, a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy book. I already own a H2G2 set. It was a sixth hitchhikers guide book.

"What," I said when I opened it, "he died. While writing the fifth book." probably not my most gracious reception of a gift ever, but really. What. It's written by some Eoin Colfer guy.

I didn't even hear about this. Surely I would have heard about something like this. I just don't know what to think. Has anyone read it yet, or at least bought it? Should I be filled with childlike glee or seething nerd rage? Should I read it, or leave my outlook on the series untarnished? Is this going to turn into another Dune fiasco? Why would they do this? Didn't the movie shamelessly milk the franchise enough? Am I overreacting? What kind of name is Eoin anyway? I NEED ANSWERS.

My mom bought it yesterday, but I haven't read it.

I actually had the same reaction; "What, I thought he died! Who the hell is this guy, and why is he writing another person's series?"

 Read it. If it's good then enjoy it. If it's bad laugh at how somebody tried to make another book.

Eoin Colfer wrote the Artemis Fowl books, about Richie Rich and Brock Sampson on a quest to steal the fairies' Bible.

Eoin Colfer wrote the Artimes Fowl series(haven't read it, but I saw it a lot at book fairs).
He apparently didn't like the idea at first.

I've begun listening to the radio series.  It's not as good as the original, but I still enjoyed it.

Wait. Are you talking about the BBC radio series? Because that is the original as far as the order that the HG2G was released in.

No, it's the new one.  I know there's also a seperate radio series written by Adams, though.
