Author Topic: Is there anyway (cheating or not) to tell what workshop my fey dwarf wants?  (Read 825 times)

Having more problems with fey dwarfs. I got a dwarf go into a fey mood, but they will not claim a workshop. I have built every workshop in the game (excluding Alchemist's Laboratory) but he is just sitting there, being fey.

Like I said, I've build every workshop, the magma forge is working, I built the Metalsmith's Forge as well, and have at least one of everything else. They are all working and accessible.

Does anyone know of any memory editing tricks to figure out what one he wants? Or what I may be doing wrong this time?

What're the dwarf's skills?

The wiki is notoriously inaccurate on subjects at the cutting edge, frequently reflecting passing memes, folklore, or the word on the street instead of true dwarven science.

There's a list of required workshops on the wiki. Remember to build both magma- and non-magma versions when applicable.

the magma forge is working

That automatically jumps out at me.  Is there also a NON-magma forge?

He said Metalsmiths forge right after what you quoted.

Anyways, what are the dwarfs skills?

I said it jumped out at me.  I woke up not long ago, so my brain isn't too keen on context right now.

Anyway, do you have glass furnaces of both magma and non-magma varieties?  Those technically aren't workshops, but they can be used for a glassmaker's mood.

Whatever his highest skill is will tell you.  Also make sure you didn't accidentally forbid the material the building was made of.

Dwarf Companion can also tell you specifically what kind of skill he's going to get when completing the artifact, thus telling you what kind of workshop he needs(cross referencing with the wiki, of course.)

Give skills, but if you have both a magma forge and metalsmith's forge, I'm going to guess that the appropriate building's materials have been forbidden.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Unhelpful contribution of the day:

I once had an armorsmith get a mood really early in my fort... the first mood, in fact. I was pretty happy with that, usually having to make do with inferior armor for quite a while before one finally gets legendary. But I didn't have a magma forge up and running yet, having just started laying the required tunnels. So I grabbed my just-traded-for-anvil and built a regular forge. No good.

So I deconstructed and set up the magma forge. Still no good - the magma hadn't reached that point in the pipe yet. Then finally 4-deep magma reached the forge, and the smith started walking toward it. Then it was back to three and he started walking back to his room. He went back and forth for quite a while, eventually making progress once the forge was at 4 deep more often then 3 deep. He reached the forge, and seconds later went insane when the magma level dropped back to three. So yea, be careful when building magma buildings to satisfy moods.

The trick there is to build doors and lock the moody dwarf out until it stabilizes.  But yeah, tough lesson learned.

Whatever his highest skill is will tell you.

This.

Skill levels are listed in the wiki (under... "skill").

If two are at the same level, the highest experience will be the one - you'll need a 3rd party utility (like Dwarf Companion or Dwarf Therapist) to tell that, but you should still have you a good idea from those alone.
