I think a new PC will help.
I am currently playing on a 4-year old dual core laptop. (AMD Turion64x2 ~ 1.6 gHz)
I was thinking of buying a desktop pc with as little cores as possible, with as much power per core as possible. Plus craploads of RAM.

Yeah raw Hz is where it is at, the faster your processor runs, the better.

If you can get a dual core proc to hit 5ghz with overclocking I think you will have the best comp anyone has for playing DF.

Sadly the Hz barrier is pretty intense.. they haven't really found a way to speed predecessors up lately... Just shrink the die and add more cores to them, Due to the capacitance and inductance of the micro circuits.  Over 5Ghz most of the power is completely dissipated inside the circuit as heat and the only way to break it is using massive amounts of power to overcome the loss and massive cooling systems to take away the wasted powers heat it produces.

i have 6x6(i think) and 200 dwarves. running at 20-30 FPS. sloooow. 20 minutes for 10 days, at this rate it will take years to do anything. luckily i have enough dwarves to cut times short, but i also need water, which only comes in summer and trees, which need time to grow. and these cycles take lots of time with slow FPS.
I am using aprtial print, but maybe with wrong settings.

I think it's time for someone to whip up a "how to" for optimizing performance since the new upgrades.  We know about turning off temperature and setting population caps, but surely there are other, brilliant maneuvers that can help.  Right?

Sadly no, most of the processing power is used by the path finding and job finding algorithms.. The only way to keep those down is use short corridors, in a tight area, on 1 z level, with few dwarfs.
