Museum / Stockpile question
« on: October 21, 2009, 01:56:38 pm »

I've been running into this problem ever since I saw a thread where one guy had a museum for all the cool Artifacts created in his fort. So I thought it would be a fun thing to do something similar, to create little cubicles for my Artifacts on the way to the Statue Garden.

I understand that I have to really micromanage my stockpile to get the artifact displayed there - my first one was a lowly wooden crown, so I've forbidden everything except Wooden Crowns of Artifact quality. But, dammit, the dwarves decided that since it's a stockpile it needs a bin. I've tried managing the stockpile to make sure that bins are not allowed on it - and it still gets a bin. Even worse, that damn crown is now inside a wooden bin, and I cannot manage to get it out. I've gotten it out of a bin once before, by simply ordering the bin to be taken to the depot when some traders showed up and of course it got taken out, but it all ended up exactly the same, with the crown inside a bin on what is supposed to be a display stockpile...

What am I missing? Is it something really obvious? Or do I keep on dumping bins until I don't have any more for them to lug to what I intend to be a museum? I am guessing now that having the artifact inside a bin kinda negates the whole idea of a display section...

You are missing something really obvious.

'q' over the stockpile you want to store the artifacts in. Hit 'E' to reduce the amount of bins used in the stockpile to zero, since you don't want them. Then go to the stockpile settings, and disable anything not of artifact quality from the stockpile.

In time, you will have a stockpile of artifacts, with no bins.

My problem is getting it to work for stuff like Thread and rope and such -_-; since there's no quality control on those... I guess I could just build it..

Thread goes into the cloth stockpile, and I don't know whether that has quality modifiers.

Rope/chains are finished goods.
