Cave crocodile splosion
« on: October 20, 2009, 01:29:22 pm »

So, they are breeding pretty fast, but i can't access them in the river. any dwarvenly ways to kill them? i don't think i want to flood the river with magma, which would be ideal if it wouldn't turn to obsidian...

(Wouldn't otherwise care, but i think it might up my framerates a bit...)

Shoot them down with marksdwarves. Carve a tunnel to the river, and then smooth and carve a fortification into the wall so your dwarves can see the targets. (At this point, civilians will start refusing to work in that tunnel until all the cave river creatures are killed).

Shooting at live targets gives vastly more experience than practicing on the archery range. It's a great way to train up marksdwarves.

wouldn't the water come through the fortifications?

Don't quote me on this, i've never found an underground river

my champion is now holding his artifact crossbow by his upper left leg and still shooting with is just fine despite having no hands.
What? He's firing from the hip.

Cage them; Cave Crocs make winning pets.

Alternatly, block off the cave river at the source and then charge down the dry riverbed with soldiers.

Dogstile: presumably you'd be smart enough to put your fortification on the level above the water. :)

Would have been funny if he put it on the same level and the water rushed through into his fort :) crocs and all.

Oooh, didn't think about fortifications... At this moment, i had opened a tunnel there, and lost a champion with full steel plate + shield to drowning. Well, at least he killed like seven ot eight of those crocs before drowning. After that i just sealed the tunnel off and quit DF for the day.

About drying the river, are pumps strong enough to stop the flow of the river?

Kinda crude image, but if there was pumps where the two vertical lines are, could they pump so efficiently that no water gets through?

Pumps are mad strong. Can't guarantee water won't get past but you can be sure the pump will get most if not all of it... as long as someone's manning it. Dwarves get exhausted from working them so ...

You should abandon the fort, reclaim, and then abandon again to triple the cave crocodile population AND spread them all over your abandoned fort. Then take an adventure and brave the ruins.

Personally the way i block UG rivers is i just cave-in a wall into place right up near the start of the river. Problem solved, clear out riverbed and de-mine the wall (either carefully or... not...)  and problem is solved.
