Detailed Engravings in Fortress Mode?
« on: October 19, 2009, 08:39:34 pm »

Hey all,

Searched around, even checked the wiki, but couldn't find much on it. :( I'm probably just overlooking something simple, but...

How do I set it to show detailed engravings when I'm in Fortress mode? The "An engraving of dwarves surrounded by dwarves" is all too common and very boring. :( And I don't like to explore my fortress in adventure mode until after they fall.

Any advice?

Thanks!

init file, very near the end, there's an option for it.

Incase you don't know, DFfolder>data>init>init.txt

And that option is [SHOW_ALL_HISTORY_IN_DWARF_MODE:NO]

change to [SHOW_ALL_HISTORY_IN_DWARF_MODE:YES]

Thanks a bunch guys, really appreciated.

Now I have to set aside a couple hours to read the engravings.

You have to be pretty lucky to get any interesting ones. All my historical engravings are of artifacts being made, the first queen coming into existence, or falling goblins.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I get a lot of "The artwork relates to the founding of Blah the Blah of Blah"

A lot of "The artwork relates to the elevation of Urist McBlah as leader of the Blah Blahs."

And then once the engraver has done enough, a storm of "The artwork relates to the engraving The Blah Blahs by Urist McVain."

I once had a fort 230 strong where I locked up 229 of them, giving my legendary engraver a front row seat to watching them starve, tantrum, and die.

Then I had him engrave the fortress.

Maybe 1 out of 100 of the engravings were not of the founding, the mayor, or the HFS.

(Not an engraving, but I did once get an artifact which had decorations relating to the founding of a *different* fort from mine within the same civ.  Never seen that before.)

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

All you really need for interesting engravings are long world gens where your civ went to war with other civs. My eternal stairway is lined with engravings of dwarves killing goblins or vice versa back in the war of 254 (I ended world gen at 600 due to more powerful megabeasts). It helps to kill more entities in horrible ways during the history of your current fort as well.
